at risk: trong nguy cơ. Speeding puts drivers at risk of tragic accidents!

at someone’s beck and call: ở trong tình trạng hễ bị người nào đó muốn gặp mình thì phải trình diện ngay. Our boss acts like a dictator and expects the entire staff to be at his beck and call. Fortunately, his retirement is around the corner!

at stake: trong tình trạng có thể bị thua thiệt. Our firm has a great deal at stake  if this land development project fails.

at the crossroads: tới lúc phải đổi thay, ở ngã tư đường. In light of an inevitable downsizing, the Jones and Associates Law Firm is at the crossroads.

at the drop of a hat: tức thì, làm liền. Our restless teenage children are ready to pack their bags to go on vacation at the drop of a hat. [restless = edgy = không thể ngồi yên một chỗ, hiếu động].

at the helm: trong địa vị lèo lái, chỉ huy. With a go-getter like Mr. Trần at the helm, we trust the company will soon be in the black again. [at the helm = at the wheel. || helm = bánh lái tàu thủy || a go-getter = một người tháo vát, quyết đoán để đạt mục đích || in the black = khi tiền thu vào lớn hơn tiền chi ra ≠ in the red].

at the mercy of: (số phận) nằm trong tay ai.  The fearful captured rebels are at the mercy of a tough-looking company commander. || không có phương tiện chống đỡ. Out in the field on a bad-weather day, farmers are at the mercy of heavy rain and strong wind.

at the top of one’s lungs: khóc to tiếng hết cỡ. Hungry babies often cry at the top of their lungs.

at this point: ở thời điểm này, hiện giờ. At this point, Mrs. Nguyễn, the richest widow in Vĩnh Long City, has several cash-strapped suitors. [at this point = at this point in time = at this moment = as we speak || cash-strapped = thiếu tiền tiêu].

at this rate: cứ theo cái đà này thì. Let’s not take too many breaks, folks. At this rate we may not finish the project in time as promised.

avoid like the plague: tránh như tránh hủi. Since Bob was released from prison for child molestation, his friends have avoided him like the plague.

babe in the wood: ngây thơ, khờ dại cho nên dễ bị thiệt hại. Talking about financial investment, Lisa was a babe in the wood. After a sizable loss, she now uses the service of an experienced financial advisor. [Thành ngữ lấy từ bài dân ca thảm  thương “The children in the woods” kể chuyện hai trẻ mồ côi bị bỏ vào rừng rồi chết trong đó].

backseat driver: người ngồi trong xe mà lại hay “dạy khôn” và phê bình người đang lái xe. A chronic backseat driver, my grandmother drives me crazy with her needless instructions!

back the wrong horse: yểm trợ không đúng người. Our candidate received only 15% of the votes and lost the election; we certainly backed the wrong horse.

back to basics: trở lại nguyên tắc căn bản. We must throw out the fancy proposal and get back to basics to stay in our budget.

back to the drawing board: trở lại từ đầu vì nỗ lực hiện tại đã thất bại. The staff had to go back to the drawing board because their plan to diversify the company was rejected by the president. [back to the drawing board = back to square one].

bad blood:  sự bất bình giữa hai cá nhân hay hai nhóm. There has been bad blood between the Trần family and the Nguyễn family in our neighborhood for

several years now. [Người ta tin rằng máu và sự tức giận có liên hệ với nhau. Người Việt nói “Tôi tức hộc máu sau khi bị tụi nó lường gạt hết tiền.” Người Anh nói “My blood boils whenever I catch that jerk kissing my daughter”].

bad egg: người đã trở thành kẻ lường gạt.  You cannot trust that fast talker – he is a notorious bad egg. [fast talker = con artist = scam artist = cheater].

bad hair day: một ngày sắc diện, nhất là mái tóc, trông không hấp dẫn như trong các ngày khác. Do you know why Susan looks sad today? – Not really, maybe she is having a bad hair day! We all know she cares a lot about how she looks.

bad mouth: nói xấu. Hey, you should stop bad mouthing the nice folks who want to be your friends.

bad news: một người hay một việc không ai muốn chấp nhận. Why does everyone shun Mary Smith? – Simply put, that woman is bad news. || Are you happy with your promotion to executive vice-president? – No, for me it is bad news!

[shun = stay away from].

bad sort: cá nhân bất nhã, ác miệng.  Soon after a wonderful honeymoon, Mary’s

courteous husband turned out to be a bad sort.

bail out: múc nước ra khỏi thuyền. The frightened boys had to bail out water from the leaky boat in the center of a large lake. || cứu ai ra khỏi một trường hợp khẩn cấp (emergency), thường là tiền bạc. My best friend’s struggling business was about to go belly-up, so I used most of my savings to bail him out.

[to go belly-up = to go bankrupt = to go south = sập tiệm, phá sản].

baker’s dozen: 1tá = 13. To celebrate its first week of business, the new doughnut shop in our neighborhood will give customers a baker’s dozen. [Ngày xưa bên Âu châu, bánh mì được bán theo trọng lượng; tiệm nào bán bánh để thiệt cho khách hàng vì cân không đủ thì bị phạt nặng. Để được an toàn, các tiệm bánh mì thường đưa khách hàng 13 cái bánh nhưng chỉ tính tiền 12 cái thôi].
